The 2017 Girls State will be June 11th through June 16th, 2017 and will be held at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho.

All Junior high school girls who wish to attend will have to contact their school guidance Counselor, then he/she will contact an American Legion Auxiliary Unit in that area. Or you may contact the Unit directly.  If you do not know your Unit, you may contact the American Legion Auxiliary Secretary at  208-342-7066 or the 2017 Girls State Director Kaylene Burtenshaw, 208-716-1501. 

Auxiliary members will select all delegates that attend, so it is imperative that if you would like to attend Girls State, contact your local American Legion Auxiliary Unit!

Idaho Syringa Girl State


ALA Idaho Syringa Girls State is a premier program for high school junior girls. 

For those Girls State delegates that have a Veteran related to them, they are eligible to submit the Samsumg Scholarship.  One application will be chosen this June at Girls State and the winner announced and will recieve a $1000.00 scholarship.  That application will then   scholarships that will be awarded to Girls & Boys State delgates . 

Scholarships Awarded
Every year, $300,000 in Samsung American Legion Scholarships are awarded to nearly 100 American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State participants. These scholarships are for undergraduate study only and may be used for tuition, books, fees, room, and board.

Scholarship Deadline: Typically, applications are submitted to the program staff upon the participants’ arrival at American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State. Current information about the Samsung application process will be available on this site after January, 2017.


This application is also a fillable form on the website and must be completed online.  The application will be updated when National has changed it on their websites. Make sure you have proof of your Veterans military service, typically their DD214. 

Applicants must be high school juniors who attend either American Legion Auxiliary Girls State or American Legion Boys State.Applicants must be direct descendants (i.e., child, grandchild, great-grandchild, or legally adopted child) of a U.S. wartime veteran who served on active duty during one or more of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for membership in The American Legion.Applicants who are direct descendants of Korean War veterans will receive special consideration.Scholarship winners are selected based on academic record, involvement in school and community activities, community service, and financial need.

Purpose Statement
To provide an outstanding, unique, and coveted educational opportunity for the young women of our nation that instills the basic ideals and principles of American government through the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation citizenship training programs.

Eligibility
Girls who have successfully completed their junior year of high school and who have at least one more semester remaining are considered. Previous participants of a Girls State competition are not allowed to attend a second session. Only those who illustrate leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty and service in their schools and community should be considered. Merit and ability are the basis for evaluation during the actual citizens selection process.

Auxiliary units in in Idaho proudly host American Legion Auxiliary Syringa Girls State, an amazing week of learning focused on responsible citizenship and love for God and Country. Students are assigned to mock cities where, divided into the “Federalist Party” and “Nationalist Party,” they are immersed into learning about the political process from dedicated volunteers, making sure the program’s nonpartisan governmental, patriotic and civic objectives are carried out with intense learning along with some fun. The program's staff also stay vigilant about raising the girls’ awareness of the importance of service, particularly to our veterans, their families and their communities.
